History of Martinique Airport
Jacques du Parquet (1606–1658), the nephew of Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc and the first governor of Martinique, decided to have Fort Saint Louis constructed in 1638 so that the city could be protected from invasions by hostile forces.
The administrative capital of Martinique was formerly known as Fort-Royal. Still, it was eclipsed by Saint-Pierre, the oldest city on the island.
During the French Revolution, the name of Fort-Royal was briefly altered to "Fort-La-Republique." It was not until sometime in the 19th century that the name was firmly fixed as "Fort-de-France."
The city's original name, Fort-Royal, is still used today in its Creole language form as "Foyal," and the people who live in the town are referred to as "Foyalais."
A British force successfully capturing Martinique in 1762 also took control of the city. The Treaty of Paris resulted in the island being returned to French sovereignty. In 1839, a small earthquake occurred, and in 1890, a large part of the city was destroyed by an outbreak of fire.
By the turn of the 20th century, Fort-de-France had become economically significant after the town of Saint-Pierre had been destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902.
Before 1918, when its commercial expansion began, Fort-de-France had an inadequate water supply, was partially surrounded by wetlands, and was known for yellow fever. In 1918, however, the city began to experience growth in its business sector. To make room for extensive suburbs, the wetlands are currently being drained.
Martinique Airport sits 5 meters above sea level at 14.595894619822214, -61.00017952952151 in Le Lamentin, Fort-de-France, Martinique.
